The work was looted from the Jewish Museum in Berlin, where it was on loan from the artist, in the 1930. Following the end of World War II, the American-based Jewish Restitution Successor Organization (JRSO) collected orphaned art and distributed the pieces to Jewish institutions worldwide. Liebermann's painting was one of more than 1,000 works the JRSO delivered in 1955 to the Bezalel National Museum, the precursor to the Israel Museum.
